Exca-Gator! (Flamingo Books) by Brooke Hartman, illustrated by Michael Slack has been named a winner of Good Housekeeping’s 2026 book awards! This is judged not only by editors at Good Housekeeping, but also by children and their families, who are invited to rate and read hundreds of titles.
Here’s what they had to say about EXCA-GATOR:
A clever title (an alligator in an excavator) draws in readers for a rhyming story centered on self-control and teamwork. When the alligator’s work turns into a muddy mess, those in other vehicles step in to help do the job. Ages 3 to 7
TESTER NOTES: Construction fans were captivated. “Having read what feels like every construction book in existence, I have a high bar,” said one mom. “This is a cute addition to a construction-focused library.” Another parent noted, “We especially love the meaning behind the book: Take your time, and ask for help if needed.”
Congratulations Michael!
