Betsy Snyder

“It’s The Invisible Lady with One Orange Leg,” five-year-old Betsy Snyder explained, and what began as a childhood marker doodle on cardboard has grown into a lifelong love of art.

A 1998 University of Dayton graduate with a degree in Visual Communication Design, Betsy has made the juvenile market her niche, working as an illustrator, designer, and trend consultant for both a children’s book publisher and a world-renowned social expressions company. After six years at American Greetings, Betsy decided to say goodbye to corporate life and hello to working in her slippers. Betsy’s versatility, conceptual skills, publishing, and social expressions experience have won her a diverse range of projects for many high-profile clients and brands. Her artwork can be seen on products ranging from books, scrapbook kits, stickers, puzzles, greeting cards, gift-wrap, party goods, signage and packaging.

Viewing the world through her “kid goggles,” Betsy finds inspiration almost everywhere: in her childhood memories, her travels, and most especially, in her favorite things like buttery popcorn, nighttime picnics, backyard bonfires, big dogs, and dipping her toes in the ocean. When she isn’t busy doodling with orange markers, Betsy also enjoys hiking, stargazing, printmaking, and cozy hobbies like felt making and knitting, especially in the winter. Betsy and her husband reside near Cleveland, Ohio.

Reviews

Praise for Betsy's author/illustrated book Sweet Dreams Lullaby, published by Random House 2010:

The author-illustrator of Haiku Baby (2008) offers a soothing bedtime story with just the right amount of sweetness...The charming collage artwork, with images of snuggling squirrels and daddy frogs singing little ones to sleep, will bring a smile...A worthy and welcome addition to the canon of cozy bedtime stories. —Booklist

The rhyming text describes the little bunny in different outdoor scenes where fireflies are cast as nightlights, a daddy frog “sings low and deep, / lulling all the pond to sleep” and stars whisper “good night.” Digitally produced art with collage elements employs a rich, soothing palette befitting the gentle cadence of the text. A lovely addition to bedtime-book collections. —Kirkus

The idea of lulling oneself to sleep like this is an appealing one, and the smooth verse and accessible pictures are appealing as well. The colors are jewel-like, especially in the evening scenes. —School Library Journal.

The language is rich and evocative, drawing on listeners' sense memory...there's a lumious effect in the soft landscape backgrounds, while figures have the crisp or even fuzzy layered look of cut paper, adding texture and dimension. The gentle rhythm and lilting verses accompanied by the charm-dense compositions make this a natural choice for settling down at the end of the day, sweet dreams pending. —Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books.
